Hello all,
This is the first installment of a series of reviews and/or articles
I’m going to do on U-boats. I’ve built three ships in my modeling career
and two submarines, none of which came out very well. But I was much
younger then and my skills have improved. I tend to gravitate towards
German subject matter mostly on the basis of aesthetics. So I’ve decided
it’s time to try my hand at U-boats and Schnell boats.

Being the kind of person who likes
to stir the pot so to speak, I thought this would be a good opportunity
to get the modelers in the club to explore different modeling subjects.
I’ve noticed, in my years associated with model clubs that most people
tend to concentrate on one or two subjects and shun the rest. I think
when we do so we do ourselves a great disservice. As modelers, we might
not be interested in cars or armor or ships, but by building a kit on a
subject out of our comfort zone we can learn skills that can be applied
to our preferred genre(s). Not only that, but we can gain an
appreciation for skills required to make a great looking model in other
subject matters. |

Any modeler worth his/her salt
knows research is the key to making a historically accurate
representation of a given subject matter. Also, research often reveals
interesting camouflage patterns and marking not addressed by the kit’s
manufacturer, for example, P-51 Mustangs in RAF colors. I personally
despise “rivet counting” and think it is one of the worst problems
plaguing our hobby. So as I review kits bear in mind, the primary
purpose for me is having fun doing a hobby I love. I’ve included a short
list of websites I’ve found useful for my U-boat and Schnell boat
projects. These include reference sites and retailers of hard to find
kits, supplies and research material. This list is not intended to be
definitive.
Watch for an upcoming review of my latest U-boat
adventure.
Happy building!
